Capt Fuata Jione and the Team at PSP.
“It all begins with an idea. Papuan Sea Pilots Pty Ltd was born out of a gap in the PNG Oil and Gas industry that has exptratriate pilots/mooring/loading Masters serving the Kumul Marine terminal since 1992. With due credit to Chevron Niugini it commenced a Cadet training program of majority deck cadets in the Chevron Fleet. Unfortunately Chevron sold its Oil and Gas interest and assests to Oilsearch and its JV partners in 2003 and the PNG cadet training scheme fell apart. Oilsearch took over in 2003 and not until 2015 that it introduced two local assistant Mooring Masters at Kumul. As the Director and founder of Papuan Sea Pilots I was previliged to be a Lead trainer.
As Papuan LNG and other Oil and Gas developments appear in its planning and later construction phase the gap of having available PNG nationals competent to take the reigns in the Oil and gas industry remains in PNG’s maritime history.
Papuan Sea Pilots and its Joint Venture partners Laba Ltd have now fostered an association to build the future of Maritime services in the Oil and Gas Industry. Acquiring ISPO standards, obtaining P&I insurance for its pilots and the bussiness and an Interim Pilotage license the journey begins for the future of PNG pilots into the Oil and Gas sector.”
Papuan Sea Pilots (PSP) Pty Ltd secured its office and apartment.
Duty pilot safety is paramount so finding a safe location for Office administration close to the wharf is one key setup feature signed off to commence on April 1 2025. Though PSP operate on paperless platform from anywhere it is important to have backup and support contingencies in place.
Also completed issue of P&I insurance from ITIC London based insurer for PSP and its Pilots. We believe this is a first for a PNG pilotage Provider and made possible by acquiring ISPO SMS signed off from Lloyds Register. WP and PL insurance are from local insurers.
Finally after a long process Papuan Sea Pilots Pty Limited obtained its Interim Pilotage Provider license for the Pilotage district of Port Moresby.
With approved ISPO (International Standard for Maritime Pilotage Organisation) SMS signed off by Lloyds Register for Port Moresby and the Kumul Marine terminal the Team at Papuan Sea Pilots can now commence pilotage in Port Moresby and complete its full ISPO certifcation and licensing for the next 5 years.
